Honey has long been recognized as a valuable food for man. Its prime appeal has been as a sweet, energy providing carbohydrate and, as such, has been eagerly gathered by man in spite of the pain inflicted by bees protecting their food source. Biblically it has been encouraged ‘Eat honey, my son, for it is good’,was advice given by King Solomon (Proverbs, 24:13). The Koran in Sura 13 refers to honey, ‘wherein is healing for mankind’. Honey contains many substances that are beneficial, however, these constituents are very small. 181 different substances have been identified in honey. Professor Haydak conducted an experimented in 1936 by supplementing a normal diet with milk and honey - he lived for three months on milk and honey and was able to retain his normal work routine. Towards the end of the experiment he needed some vitamin C supplements, but apart from that, could lead a normal existence. In 1944 five adult repeated the experiment and they were able to exists on milk and honey for four weeks. At the end of the period they were in normal health. Honey’s main sugars, fructose and glucose, are absorbed directly into the blood and provide a rapid source of energy without stress on the digestive system. |
